Why Discovery is Broken for Indie Products

July 2026 · 5 min read

Great indie products fail quietly every week. The problem is rarely quality alone. It is a discovery system that favours scale, noise, and incumbents at the expense of independent craft.

Attention is allocated unfairly

App stores and social platforms optimise for engagement and revenue, not for surfacing the best small tools. Ranking systems reward downloads, reviews, ad spend, and historical momentum. New indie products start with none of those advantages, even when they solve a real problem better than the market leader.

On social feeds, discovery is even less rational. A clever meme can outperform a useful product indefinitely. Creators with large audiences can launch average tools successfully. Quiet builders with excellent craft struggle to get a fair look. That is not a meritocracy. It is a distribution imbalance that compounds year after year.

Paid acquisition can paper over the gap for well funded teams, but most indie developers do not have that option. When the default path to visibility is spend, independent software becomes harder to sustain, and buyers miss tools that would have served them better.

Categories are too blunt

Browsing by giant categories like "Productivity" or "Developer Tools" hides nuance. An indie app for ACCA students, freelancers managing invoices, or designers handing off assets gets lost beside generic giants. Without better tagging, curation, and intent based discovery, buyers cannot find what fits their actual workflow.

Search helps only when people already know what to search for. Many useful products never get that branded query traffic. Discovery needs browsing experiences that highlight fresh indie work, emerging categories, and products gaining honest traction among real users rather than manufactured launch spikes.

Reviews and social proof systems often lag too. Early products need softer trust signals: maker transparency, clear demos, and community recommendations. Without those, even interested buyers hesitate, and indie listings stall before they can accumulate traditional metrics.

A marketplace built for fairer discovery

Fixing discovery means changing the incentives. Feature products based on usefulness signals, maker transparency, and category fit. Give indie apps room to be found without requiring a marketing department. Make it easier for buyers to explore thoughtfully instead of doomscrolling past another sponsored post.

That is the founding idea behind Orbyn: a purple themed marketplace for indie discovery where products are easier to find because the platform is designed around makers and intentional browsing. Discovery should not be broken by default. Join the Orbyn waitlist if you want to help build the alternative and put indie products back where buyers can actually find them.
